Coleman | "I thought the players were fantastic"

Coley

Gillingham boss John Coleman was delighted with his side's 1-0 victory over Bradford City at the MEMS Priestfield Stadium on Saturday.

Conor Masterson, who returned to the starting XI after a lengthy lay-off due to injury, scored the winning goal during the second half. Gills have now won back-to-back games at home, and Coleman is keen to try and turn Priestfield into a fortress. He praised the supporters for part they played in the victory.

Coleman also discussed his post-match emotions, the performance itself and the impact the substitutes made on the fixture.

Emotions post-match...

I'm really pleased with the performance. Obviously, I am more pleased with the result. I can be this week as opposed to last week with the relief. It's more happiness this week because the game plan worked. I wanted the lads to believe that they could win.

You need a bounce of the ball every now and then, and we got the bounce of the ball today. That hasn't happened too many times for us at home.

Discussing the performance...

I really fancied us to win. I thought that the key was that if we nullified their attacking threat with the two tens, that would drop in, and we didn't get to them all the time, but I thought that was a really solid defensive display against a team that has been flying.

For us to limit them to such few chances, to have that determination to win the first contact and get the second ball while still making a couple of good chances ourselves.

I don't think that any one of our players could be criticised today, and I won't have them be criticised! I thought they were fantastic today.

Conor Masterson's goal...

It was a great finish. Sometimes you're turning and you just want to hit the target, and he has done it really well because he has got power on it. He did say to me during the week that he has goals in him.

Relationship with the fans...

The fans could see the passion and the effort of the players today and the willingness to work for the shirt, which, as a football fan, is all you require. I'm glad we have got that back, and I'm glad that we have got that relationship back with the home fans.

We have got to be mindful that we want to make this place a fortress. The fans play a big part in that, and they did today. They stayed with us from the start until the end, which was brilliant. That's what we want.

The decision to change the back three and the impact of the substitutions...

I changed it around, and Max Ehmer was unlucky to be the one to be left out. I wanted my back three to be more high pressing, and I thought that Conor [Masterson] would give us that. That is no slight on Max. You even saw when he came on how much he cared, headed the balls and won tackles. He organised the team and kept us with a cool head.

I thought that all the subs made an impact, which was good. Jonny Williams was winning headers. It was a great cameo.

Nev [Elliott Nevitt] comes on and works his socks off, and Nelson's [Khumbeni] has left his lung out there.
