Masterson | "It was beautiful"

Masterson

Conor Masterson's long-awaited return to the Gillingham starting XI proved worthwhile, as he scored the only goal of the game in the 1-0 victory against Bradford City at the MEMS Priestfield Stadium on Saturday.

The goal came in the 56th minute with the defender describing the moment as 'the best feeling in the world' and was delighted to return to action following his injury layoff.

Gills had to dig deep as they faced a Bradford side hoping to go top of the League Two table. The hosts limited the number of chances their visitors had, and the Irish defender praised the efforts of every player that featured in the game.

The atmosphere at the MEMS Priestfield Stadium was fantastic throughout, and Masterson praised the environment the crowd created for the players in ME7.

Emotions post-match and scoring the winner...

It's the best feeling in the world. Just to hear the ball hit the back of the net and the Gills supporters screaming - it was beautiful.

It's been a while, but listen, I'm just buzzing. A brilliant win against a really good side in Bradford. I thought that the team were outstanding to a man. We worked our socks off.

I thought that to a man, the lads were brilliant.

Returning from injury…

I was knackered. It was about 75 when I first went down, and I just wanted to finish the game, but my legs and body wouldn’t let me! It was great to be back competing, feeling that atmosphere and the competitiveness again.

Discussing the team’s performance…

We knew what we wanted to do today, and we went out there and we did it. They didn’t have many chances. Us three at the back have to always be switched on, but we never felt on the brink. I always felt in control and I felt that the boys up front did strong. The lads in midfield were really good on the ball, and I thought that the two wing-backs were excellent today.

It was an all-round great performance.

On the support from the fans…

It was all as one today. It was beautiful. I felt it from minute one to the end. It’s what you dream of as a footballer. That’s what it was today. It was beautiful. I’m delighted for all of the fans, the players, the staff and everyone involved.

Everyone deserved that.
