Ehmer | "We lacked control"

Ehmer

Gillingham captain Max Ehmer acknowledged that the Boxing Day performance against Colchester wasn't good enough, and says the group need to put it right against AFC Wimbledon on Monday.

Gills were beaten 2-0 at the JobServe Community Stadium, their first defeat in four games.

Ehmer gave his immediate match reaction while looking ahead to the rest of the schedule over the New Year period.

Match Reaction…

It wasn’t good enough. We lacked control in the game. We didn’t win enough second balls, win enough first balls. Just an all-around poor day. It’s something that we need to learn quickly because we seem to be too inconsistent in terms of doing it.

We lacked control, lacked quality at times, and at times we could have got back into it but we didn’t. We didn’t make it count. It falls on everyone.

It was a catalogue of errors before the goal, but it’s something that we sort of pride ourselves on is being fast starters, and we haven’t started fast. They came out in the first six or seven minutes and they were on top. We couldn’t get out of our half. We will dissect that in the coming days.

Needing to improve…

For us, we’re almost lucky that there’s another game coming, but you can only get away with it for so long because, at some point, the season ends, and you will be stuck in 14th place. That’s what no-one in that dressing room wants. We will go through this game today. We can’t just put that to one side. At some point, you’ve got to own up to them.

Looking ahead to AFC Wimbledon and the games in the New Year…

In terms of our away support numbers, they were superb on Boxing Day. We haven’t given them what they deserved, so it’s down to us to make sure we put that right against AFC Wimbledon.

Every game is a tricky game in this league. For some reason, we tend to do better against the better teams, but that’s something we need to snap out of. That’s a poor mentality to have. You should go into every game like it’s a cup final.
