GILLS SIGN BOURNEMOUTH DEFENDER

Versatile England under-20 defender Baily Cargill joins on loan until January

Gillingham have bolstered their squad just hours before the close of the transfer window, signing Premier League defender Baily Cargill on loan from AFC Bournemouth until January.

The 21-year-old, who has previously had loan spells at Welling United, Torquay United and Coventry City, is capable of playing as a centre-back and full-back.

Capped seven times by England’s under-20s, Cargill has made 10 first-team starts for his parent club to date, all of which came in cup competitions.

Subject to clearance, Cargill will be eligible to play in Sunday’s Sky Bet League One game against Sheffield United at the MEMS Priestfield Stadium.

He becomes the 12th signing made by the club this summer.

"We always said we wanted to add quality to the squad when bringing in players, and Baily ticks that box," said manager Justin Edinburgh. "He will prove to be an extremely important signing for Gillingham Football Club, and I'm delighted to secure his loan signing.

"As ever, I'd like to thank the Chairman and Keith Burt, our Director of Football, for their support and work in bringing him into the club."

This deal represented the last transfer activity involving the Gills during this transfer window.
