Clemence | "We need to give them something to worry about"

Head Coach wants his team to put in another strong performance against Walsall this weekend.

Stephen Clemence is looking forward to catching up with one of his ex-teammates when he drops in to Priestfield on Saturday, but he is desperate to send his guest home unhappy and empty handed.

Current Walsall manager Mat Sadler was a youngster breaking into the Birmingham first-team when Clemence was captain of the club, and the two have remained close since.

With Walsall visiting ME7 on Saturday the two are thrown together yet again and the ambitious managers are unlikely to be doing each other any favours after the pre-game handshake, despite their mutual respect.

"I was Mat Sadler's captain when he was a young player," reminisced Clemence. "It was when he was coming into the team at 17 or 18. He is obviously someone who I am still in touch with. It will be good to see him at the weekend but I am hoping that I can get one over on him.

"Mat, at the time, was quite quiet and feeling his way into the first-team environment. I always looked out for the young players and I think if you spoke to him he would probably say that. It can be a brutal environment on a football pitch in front of a big crowd, I always tried to support the younger players.

"I always looked out for him. He had a decent career as a player and I am pleased he has now moved into management, he is definitely the right character and the right type to do it.

"I was the captain and we had a really good group, we got promoted back into the Premier League. I am glad that he has done well.

"We spoke when he got the job at Walsall and I wished him all the best. I want him to do well but I won't be wanting that this weekend.

"They have some good players. They have recruited well and have had some decent results. They are trying to be successful like we are. We need to bring our performance and bring our 'A game' and we need to make sure we give them something to worry about.

"I'm looking forward to having a beer with him after the game, but hopefully I will be the one with a smile on my face, and he won't."
